The U.S FDA conducted a sampling assignment in 2022 and 2023 to test imported honey for economically motivated adulteration (EMA), such as the inclusion of cheaper sweeteners.

▪️ Out of 107 samples, 3% were found to be violative. This follows a 2021-2022 assignment where 10% of 144 samples were violative.

▪️ The FDA took action against violative samples and is continuing to improve detection methods.

▪️ The results of this assignment show honey continues to be a commodity susceptible to economically motivated adulteration.

If you use honey in your food business, make sure that your raw material risk assessment reflects the risk of food fraud for this commodity.
